Another quick update

I just realised it's been a few days since I posted or even looked at anyones blog, so sorry about that.  I've been pretty busy this week trying to find a job, but I found one and start on Tuesday!  Woohoo!  With that in mind I'm going to try to do as much work on the game this weekend as possible because after I start working I will have less time to work on it.  I will still be active and updating the game and blog but probably only once or twice a week.  I have done some work on the game today, with a bit more to do, but I'll have an update within the next few hours.

On another note, one of the comments I received mentioned HTML5 as being more modern and available on more devices (i-crap), and after doing some research I've realised this is correct. Flash is old, it's been around since the early 2000s.  AS3 has modernised it a bit, but AS3 is so different to AS2 that I figure why bother putting effort into learning a new version of old technology, why not just learn how to use the new technology.  From what I have read HTML5 is extremely powerful when combined with simple javascript, and I think it will be more useful in the long run.  So I'm going to finish making circle attack, get it more polished and looking good over the next few weeks, but more than likely the next game I build will be HTML5/Javascript.  What do you guys think?  Let me know in the comments, Flash or HTML5, or would I be better learning some other language / environment?

  1. Interesting info. You're forgiven for taking a bit of time off. We've all been busy recently.

  2. I remember when HTML3.0 was the hottest new thing.

And the World Wide Web Consortium actually held sway over what was what with Internuggest programming.

So anyway, duuuuude...Flash is tried and true, but if yer gonna try somethin' new just jump in and try it, y'knowwhatImean?

    I'm a big believer in sink-or-swim.

  4. The bastard is right. Try html5 it won't hurt you. And you might end up learning more. Nonetheless if you need something from flash it might be trouble. Anyhow I still say html5. And good for you getting a job. I still can't find the right job for me.

  6. Congrats! Learning HTML5 is a good trick but it has quite a big learning curve. However after seeing some of your programming I'm more than sure you can handle it.

  7. Congrats! Circle Attack is already awesome, I can't wait to see what kind of updates you'll be doing on it. :) If you wrote a book on HTML5 I'd buy it. :D

  8. HTML5 is pretty much the way to go, I think. My programmer friends seem to think quite highly of it, so my suggestion would be to at least take a cold, hard look at the system and give it a shot.

Good luck with your new job, mate.

  11. HTML5 definitely worth learning. The big reason Apple doesn't allow flash is because it is bad! Even on beastly desktops flash will eat up all your CPU cycles and is a source of many many virus/exploits today.

  22. Too much tech terms. Brain overload. I'm still trying to find the motivation to learn Python :( I've bought the book but it's just been laying forgotten in some lost corner of my room. Perhaps under the bed.

  24. I program Flash websites for a living... imagine my joy having to learn HTML5 and JS just to keep doing what I do now... but thanks to Adobe's new Edge program, it's not so bad.
